Napoleonic Period Prisoner of War straw work box, straw marquetry work dates to the Napoleonic wars between the French, Dutch and English at the end of the 18th century. The interior with three compartments of multi-color banded straw; larger central compartment with a removable lid decorated with musical & floral decoration.English Circa 1780.

French and Dutch prisoners of war made these incredible boxes out of straw, basic wood and inexpensive dyes. They were allowed to sell their wares at prison markets. The symbolism depicted in the inlays show some of the thoughts and longings of the prisoners creating the work, in this piece the roses and a violin represent love and musical that had been left behind. The work is both sad and inspirational.
