Paneled Oak Box Seat Settle Dated and Initialed "I. T. 1721", England

List: $6,500

A richly patinated early 18th Century, English, George I, paneled oak box settle, the back with hand carved and decorated crest rail, five fielded panels, with open arms, the seat with a lifting lid and three fielded panels to front. The sturdy oak construction, deep storage well in the seat and back would make a handsome and useful addition to a hall, be it entryway or mudroom. .[1. Settles are commonly movable, but occasionally fixed. The settle shares with the chest and the chair the distinction of great antiquity. Its high back was a protection from the draughts of medieval buildings, protection which was sometimes increased by the addition of winged ends or a wooden canopy. It was most frequently placed near the fire in the common sitting-room.]
height: 41 in. 104 cm. , width: 65 in.165 cm., depth: 21.5 in. 54.5 cm.
