Regency Plumwood Specimen Wood Box

Regency Period; English specimen wood box, circa 1830. The plumwood case is surmounted by a hinged lid with a tumbling block parquetry panel composed of various contrasting exotic hardwoods — including rosewood, ebony, satinwood, bird's-eye maple, and burr walnut — within kingwood crossbanding and fine boxwood and ebony line stringing. The case of well-figured solid plumwood with canted edges and a molded lip to the lid. Brass bail handles to each side with foliate rosette mounts; diamond-form bone escutcheon to the front. The sides are fitted with stamped brass bail handles with floral rosettes. The interior lined in green silk damask with a repeating star and lattice pattern. The box sits flush on its base. Working lock and key. Interior surfaces show light wear consistent with age and use; veneer with minor marks and small repairs typical of early 19th-century boxes.
