A handsome Sea Captain’s box with pierced brass banding; this box features a dark beechwood exterior; the surface comprised of the carved wood in tightly-cut concentric patterned grooves on all side. The interior in lined in oak. Both hardwoods were used because of their durability and resistance to water. Solid brass carrying handles are on each side of the box. The interior compartment with lock and working key. The right side slides up to reveal a secret compartment. Additionally, the right exterior side of the box proper, while opened, slides up to reveal a false bottom with a tray. Being a ships box, there are long screws on each side of the box extending to the bottom which can be turned using the large key to fasten the box to a stable surface. Working lock and key for the main lock as well. Three keys included; English, circa 1750.
