Description

A pair of French gilt bronze candelabra each with six candle arms. The tapering central standard rises from a circular base encircled by a bay and berry border, with additional cast decoration in the form of scrollwork and stylized foliage. The base terminates in paw feet beneath a gadrooned knop. Each arm issues from a central knopped support adorned with incised five-pointed stars and terminates in fluted candle cups with gadrooned rims, supported by scrolling branches with classical masks. The central standard is ornamented with masks wearing stylized headdresses, likely referencing Egyptomania motifs. The center nozzle is detailed with palmettes and an eagle in relief, echoing imperial iconography associated with the Second Empire. French, circa 1860.
