Description
Walnut chest on chest with upper section of three short drawers over three long drawers above a lower section of three long drawers, on bracket feet; the case is veneered in figured walnut with herringbone crossbanding to the drawer fronts and a projecting moulded cornice above a frieze; each drawer has brass backplates and bail handles with conforming escutcheons and working locks and keys; the upper section has canted corners with vertical reeded mouldings, introducing a classical pilaster‑like emphasis and visually softening the mass of the case, while the lower section has square corners; the chest separates into two sections. English, George I period, circa 1720.
