Leather Elephant Footstool by Dimitri Omersa for Abercrombie & Fitch

Description

A standing elephant-form footstool in dark brown leather, the body assembled from shaped stitched panels with a hand-stitched seam extending along the spine. The elephant has pendant ears, small inset eyes, a long raised trunk, applied pale leather tusks, four short legs and a long tail terminating in cut-leather fringe. The surface shows creasing, rubbing, scattered abrasions and tonal variation consistent with age and use. An oval A&F Co. stamp is impressed to the inner face of one ear. Dimitri Omersa took over production of the leather animal footstools supplied to Liberty of London in 1958 and subsequently expanded the range beyond the original pig. The elephant was among the earliest new models. Omersa’s animals were later retailed in the United States by Abercrombie & Fitch, with documented examples carrying the A&F stamp appearing from the 1960s.
