Description
Exceptional tea caddy veneered in stag horn with a pagoda-form lid surmounted by a decorative carved horn finial. The top displays a striking radiating pattern of stag horn. The canted sides with stag horn veneer in vertical striations. The box rests on spherical carved horn feet. The interior fitted with two compartments with removable bone and ebony checkerboard patterned lids, flanking a central glass container for sugar. The lid interior of fine satinwood construction with an inlaid oval medallion and decorative border. Black buffalo horn banding outlines the solid satinwood body underneath the horn veneer; working lock and key. India, circa 1830
