Description

A very large Anglo-Indian campaign style solid rosewood writing box, circa 1850. Brass bound, with recessed brass carrying handles, brass corner brackets, and brass edge strapping. Brass escutcheon to the front, with working lock and key. Brass lock plate stamped “Secure Patent” with VR (Victoria Regina) crown, consistent with the Victorian dating; a lock maker’s mark rather than a cabinetmaker’s mark.

Hinged lid opens to a fitted pen tray with divided compartments, above a bank of three small drawers with turned knobs. Below, a hinged double slope writing surface, each panel faced in gilt tooled olive green leather with a Greek key border. Additional storage area for documents beneath the lid. French polish.

Now offered on a later associated stand with square legs.
