Description
Bird’s-eye maple veneer box having a domed hinged lid centered by a rectangular panel of tumbling-block parquetry with green-stained accents, bordered by geometric Tunbridge ware banding. The fascia inset with a conforming parquetry escutcheon and banding. Opening to a crimson silk-lined interior, showing light wear and marks consistent with use. Underside with false bottom secured by rotating wooden cleats concealing a secret compartment. Raised on four compressed bun feet. Includes working lock and key. English Regency (George IV period), circa 1830.
