Description
Likely Indo-Persian or Middle Eastern, circa 1900
Rectangular gilt brass box with champlevé enamel decoration overall in cobalt blue and turquoise on a gilt ground. The decoration is composed of Islamic floral and geometric ornament arranged in repeating patterns across the exterior surfaces. The hinged lid with a continuous diaper lattice of small foliate rosettes, bordered by a narrow ornamental band. The sides carry a continuous frieze of cusped arches enclosing floral devices against alternating blue and turquoise enamel grounds. Decoration continues to all four sides and the end panels. Plain unlined gilt brass interior with simple butt hinge. Some enamel loss to the lid surface consistent with age and use. Likely a cigarette box or small presentation box. Indo-Persian or Middle Eastern, circa 1900.
